Emotions are feelings that arise when our needs are either met or unmet. And if conflict is about meeting needs, well, then conflict management is managing emotions.
If resolving conflict is about meeting each other's needs, we will have to attend to each other's emotions.
When you try to convince your opponent, your opponent will become defensive. When you seek to understand your opponent, you opponent will open up to you.
In a conflict, your opponent will attack you. Try to see each of their attacks as a tragic expression of an unmet need.
It is not always easy to label our feelings. Here is a list of terms that name different emotions. This list was adapted from those created by the Center for Nonviolent Communication.
